What Makes Our Paint Different?

Our Ingredients!

We use USP (US Pharmaceutical Grade) Refined Beeswax instead of bleached beeswax. USP Refined Beeswax is a natural beeswax that goes through a heat filtering process to remove pollen and other natural adulterants that honey bees bring back to the honeycomb. This chemical free filtering process produces highly refined beeswax without the use of bleaches.  So the USP Refined Beeswax eliminates chemicals and bleaches from our palette.  In fact, it is actually the same type of beeswax that is used in cosmetics, medicinal ointments and lip balms.  Another natural ingredient we use is Damar Resin, which is actually hardened tree sap.  We heat filter this to remove bark and other debri that may have been trapped inside the sticky sap.  It is important to note that we do not use damar varnish because it is made with turpentine, which is not only flammable but also harmful to breathe. This combination of beeswax and damar resin produces our Enkaustikos Wax Medium to which we add the highest quality artist grade pigments available. Our pigments are lightfast and engineered to withstand the heat requirements of the encaustic process without color shifts.  Furthermore, all of our color names are based on the actual pigments utilized in the paint making so as an artist, you will know what exactly what you are working with!

Our Milling System!

We recently upgraded our milling operation by installing the ultimate paint making system which utilizes advanced technology.   This has taken our paint to a whole new level! Our new milling system includes a blade that reaches speeds of 9,000fpm which means, our high-tech mill is capable of shearing pigment particles down to their smallest particle size.  This enables us to manufacture a paint that is richer, creamier, cleaner, and more vibrant than ever before!  With our milling system, we are able to bring out the true personality of each paint and as an result, we are able to create the highest quality encaustic paints on the market!  You are sure to fall in love with every color as they are professional, artist-quality paints.

Comparing Milling Systems...

This first image to the right shows encaustic paint mixed with a regular milling system.  Notice how you can see grit in the paint. This often occurs when you mix your own paint as well because the pigment particles are not being milled as finely as with our system.

This second image to the right shows encaustic paint mixed with our high-tech mill. Notice how there is no grit visible. The paint is smooth, clean, and creamy in comparison.  Plus, the color itself appears more vibrant and rich! All of our encaustic paint goes through this milling process so that we can provide you with gorgeous encaustic colors.
